Domaine De La Romanée-Conti: A Powerhouse And The Biggest Of The Biggest

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. The name itself exudes grandeur and inspires awe in even the most experienced wine connoisseur. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, or DRC, has been an institution in Burgundy since its founding in 1869, but has roots dating back to 1232. DRC has been a powerhouse in the wine world for the past 50 years.

Despite other big names in Burgundy, we venture to judge DRC as the biggest among the biggest wine producers in the world - largely detached and independent of individuals. When Madam Lalou Bize-Leroy is one day no longer part of Domaine Leroy, something will change. The DRC will endure despite the replacement of key people.

DRC's fame comes not undeservedly, and has been achieved partly through sublime winemaking from perhaps the world's most impressive land holdings spanning no less than nine Grand Crus:

  • Romanée-Conti Grand Cru (Monopoly)
  • La Tache Grand Cru (Monopoly)
  • Richebourg Grand Cru
  • Romanée-St-Vivant Grand Cru
  • Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru
  • Echezeaux Grand Cru
  • Corton Grand Cru
  • Montrachet Grand Cru (white)
  • Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru (white) (leased by Bonneau du Martray)

We have gathered a selection of DRC's outstanding wines that you now have the opportunity to invest in. Have a look below and find out more about the potential and the opportunity.

Rare And A Guarantee Of Returns

DRC is famous and renowned for presenting the finest, best, and most prestigious wines in their respective classes. At the same time, they are generally produced in such limited quantities that the wines are extremely rare even at release, while the top wine Romanée-Conti or the white wine Montrachet, for example, approach the status of completely unobtainable.

For the same reason, the wines of the DRC have also guaranteed returns, averaging 142.8 % across all the wines of the domain over the last five years, which corresponds to an average annual return of 18.4 %*.

But with such large price increases and such sky-high prices, it is obvious to ask oneself: Can it continue? Can it get more expensive? Of course, the immediate reaction is that it cannot - and many have done so over the years, and the belief in a price cap has been shattered time and time again.

According to Liv-ex, for example, the price of a bottle of 2001 Romanée-Conti has risen 1320 % since 2004 and the idea that the most expensive thing in the world has reached a maximum has been thwarted. So, looking at historical data, the conclusion is clear: for the long-term investor, DRC has guaranteed massive returns, continuously outperforming classic assets as well as the other top producers in the long run.

Below you will find a review of DRC wines available for investment right now. This is a general recommendation for investment in DRC. Here, loose bottles provide an affordable entry point for DRC investment, while different vintages can be chosen depending on taste and temperament.

*Data from Liv-ex - the last 10 vintages (2005-2014), it has been on the market for at least five years. Across Romanée-Conti, La Tache, Richebourg, Echezeaux, Grands Echezeaux, Romanée-St-Vivant, Corton and Montrachet. The first vintage of DRC Corton was 2009 so Corton data is limited to vintages 2009-2014. Corton-Charlemagne is also not included as DRC has only just released their first vintage (2019).

Echezeaux

On the Grand Cru vineyard of Echezeaux, DRC has 4.67 hectares planted with vines more than 40 years old. From these they can produce a maximum of around 22,000 bottles per vintage, but as we know, the best Burgundy producers operate on quality rather than quantity, which is why DRC produces closer to 16,000 bottles per vintage.

The last 10 vintages, which have been on the market for at least five years, have produced an average return of 176.2 %* over the last five years.

Grands Echezeaux

DRC has 3.52 hectares of the Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru vineyard. The vines here are over 60 years old and the maximum number of bottles that can be produced from them is around 17,000, although this maximum number is not used.

La Tache

La Tache has special status as a monopoly vineyard for DRC, which in other words means that if you have to drink La Tache, it has to come from DRC. There are six hectares of land and, like the Grands Echezeaux, the vines are more than 60 years old. From here, DRC is allowed to produce 30,000 bottles, but they are not doing so. To keep the high quality, the domain cuts down on quantity, which is why they produce around 20,000 bottles per vintage from La Tache. La Tache is also a popular choice among connoisseurs as an obvious alternative to the top wine Romanée-Conti - this is partly because it may be easier to get hold of, but certainly also because the style and quality make it a worthy alternative.

The last 10 vintages, which have been on the market for at least five years, have produced an average return of 111.5 %* over the last five years.

Richebourg

From 50 year old vines spread over 3.51 hectares on the Grand Cru vineyard Richebourg, DRC produces an average of 12,000 bottles per vintage. Despite Romanée-Conti, La Tache and, for that matter, La Romanée, generally regarded as a bit better, Richebourg is undoubtedly one of Vosne-Romanée's jewels, with legend Henri Jayer among those who have helped create its special status and given Richebourg a very special place in the hearts of the world's wine lovers.

The last 10 vintages, which have been on the market for at least five years, have produced an average return of 174.7 %* over the last five years.

Romanée-St-Vivant

DRC owns 5.3 hectares of Romanée-St-Vivant, which like the above vineyards is also classified as Grand Cru. DRC produces an average of 18,000 bottles per vintage, which is also significantly lower than the permitted limit. This wine was previously produced by Domaine Marey-Monge, but DRC took over the operation and also took over ownership in 1988. Today, "Marey-Monge" continues to adorn the DRC bottle label on Romanée-St-Vivant, in tribute to the Marey-Monge family.

The last 10 vintages, which have been on the market for at least five years, have produced an average return of 135.9 %* over the last five years.

Rarewine Invest's Opinion

The case is really quite simple: here you have the opportunity to invest in the case of the world's most prestigious and famous wine producer. With Romanée-Conti, DRC is behind the holy grail of the wine world, but also excels in all the other vineyards they are represented in - and what a collection!

The above gives you an opportunity to invest into the case of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in loose bottles, and thus more affordable mouthfuls - at the same time it can also give you the opportunity to spread the investment out over several of DRC's outstanding Grand Cru's.

This is a clear and standing recommendation on investing in DRC, so the choice of exactly which bottle/bottles to choose is up to your temperament. Of course, please feel free to contact your portfolio advisor or contact us through the form below.
