Defying Burgundy Hardship: Outstanding Leroy Delivers Solid Returns On Les Beaux Monts

In the shadow of mighty Musigny stands Leroy's Premier Cru Les Beaux Monts, but it is maybe here the greatest potential lies at the moment. Read more about why in this article

From Apprentice To Master

88 is no age. At least not for Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy. Indeed, with Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy's strong leadership, Domaine Leroy, in record time, seen in a Burgundian perspective, has been manifested as one of Burgundy's absolute most prestigious producers - with all it entails on demand and sky high prices.

In 1942, leaded by Henri Leroy, the Leroy family bought half of the shares of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Here, Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy gained invaluable experience, which would later prove to be the foundation of Domaine Leroy and the queen of Burgundy's legendary status and immense recognition.

Domaine Leroy, besides Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy, is known for the great Grand Cru wines such as Corton-Charlemagne, Richebourg and Musigny, the latter of which has several times topped lists of the world's most expensive wines in general production and open trade. Together with the absolute top wines, come sky high prices, which has made the slightly cheaper Les Beaux Monts become extremely attractive to many wine lovers - and for very good reason.

A Pearl of Vosne-Romanée

In Vosne-Romanée, north of the iconic field of Richebourg and vest of Echezeaux lies the Les Beaux Monts vineyard - a vineyard where the legend Henri Jayer also had his time. Les Beaux Monts is divided into four parts where Domaine Leroy has the largest part, the Premier Cru parcel Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts. The wine from Les Beaux Monts is considered by many to be the absolute best Premier Cru wine in all of Vosne-Romanée. The wine is widely recognized among the wine connoisseurs of the world, and with the opportunity to drink Leroy wine with a price tag that is in a completely different league than Leroy's top wines, the audience of Leroy's Les Beaux Monts vast and the demand great.

Domaine Leroys Les Beaux Monts is nothing less than a pearl of Vosne-Romanée. A pearl of limited production - less than 9,000 bottles are produced a year!

The King Of The Weak Vintage

A strong vintage may be the focal point of an investment tip, but when it comes to the 2011 vintage by Domaine Leroy Les Beaux Monts, which this investment tip addresses, it is the opposite. The 2011 vintage is generally a weak vintage in Burgundy, which also applies in the Côtes de Beaune and Côte de Nuits, the latter where the wine municipality of Vosne-Romanée is located. Despite this, Domaine Leroy with Les Beaux Monts has surpassed the general level of the vintage and presented a wine that holds the same level as the surrounding vintages. Burghound by Allen Meadows, who could rightly be called a Burgundy authority, has given the 2011 Les Beaux Monts 95 points, surpassed exclusively by the top-vintage of 2015 of Les Beaux Monts' 96 points.

Being able to defy what is generally a weak vintage, and being able to deliver a wine that holds the same high standards as it is otherwise known, emphasizes Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy's and Domaine Leroy's format and unique eye for quality.

All Good Things Must Come To An End

Fairy tales take, and fairy tales give. This is also the case when it comes to the great tales of the wine world. As seen world of art, legends can emerge almost out of nowhere, and although they create admirers and followers in their lifetime, the world only fully appreciates their capabilities when it is too late.

This is the case in the wine world as well. A classic examples: Henri Jayer, who in 1990 sold a box of Cros Parantoux 1985, which at that time only cost approx. € 300. In 2018, eight years after Jayer's death, a similar box was sold for approx. € 500,000. Demand for wines from both Châteauneuf-du-Pope's Henri Beaneau and DRC's Henry-Frédéric Roch also rose sharply in the wake of their demise in respectively. March 2016 and November 2018. A tribute from the market to the big icons, if you will.

Wine connoisseurs around the world are already vying for Leroy's fabulous wines today, and while it would be a gift to be able to enjoy Leroy wines forever, all great tales will come to an end, as will Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy once in history as one of the history’s greatest winemakers.

Domaine Leroy Defies The Trends: Great Returns In Troubled Market

2019 was a year in which several of the top producers in Burgundy experienced hardship, resulting in price corrections. Still, Domaine Leroy, who is a fixture in Burgundy’s top-3, defied the trends and delivered returns.

Of all Leroy wines managed by Rare Wine Invest, only a single wine - of wines that have remained in portfolio throughout 2019 – have seen price decrease. This means that virtually all Leroy wines have defied Burgundy trends and seen price increases despite the hardship.

The wines from Domaine Leroy, across vintages and wines, have yielded approx. 12% average return in 2019. Here, Leroy Musigny, one of the world's most expensive wines, is kept completely out of the picture, as this is in a class of its own and would distort the image as certain vintages have yielded around +50% in the same period.

Focusing specifically on Les Beaux Monts, the amount of data is limited, which may indicate that the wines are traded fewer times before being drunk. Despite this, it can be concluded that the 2014 Les Beaux Monts has increased approx. 80% in value in 2019 - a wine with 95 Burghound points, just like the 2011 vintage.

Domaine Leroy has thus, almost regardless of wine and vintage, been the guarantor of returns in a headwind market and also proved in 2019 how great the investment potential of these wines is, where the Premier Cru Les Beaux Monts was the highlight.

RareWine Invest’s Opinion

Rare Wine Invest recommends Domaine Leroy and right now, 2011 Les Beaux Monts looks like a particularly attractive investment.

Domaine Leroy is unquestionably a permanent resident of Burgundy's absolute top and an investment in its wines is well aided by oneof the world's most prestigious wine brands – the Leroy brand.

Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy has, for almost 30 years delivered unparalleled wines of extremely high quality and honors each bottle - something that can be read in the reputation and demand, whether Village, Premier Cru or Grand Cru wines. Add to this that Domaine Leroy's production, even in a Burgundian perspective, is extremely limited.

Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy has by 2011 Les Beaux Monts proved that, even in a weak vintage where other great producers are experiencing deteriorating quality, she can maintain tremendously high standards. At the same time, Domaine Leroy, seemingly completely unaffected by all the 2019 hardship, has delivered excellent returns across almost all wines and vintages. This underlines once again the great investment potential of the Leroy wines.

2011 Les Beaux Monts secures a cheap entrance to investment in Domaine Leroy and at the same time this wine has shown signs of being one of the strongest Leroy investments of 2019 with price increases of up to 80%.
