Méo-Camuzet - Classic Burgundy Investment Of Jayer's Spirit

Méo-Camuzet has all the characteristics that for years have made Burgundy wines a solid investment. But not all burgundy wines have ties to Burgundy's perhaps greatest legend…

Méo-Camuzet - Here Henri Jayer Lives On

Over the past 120 years, four people have each contributed to making the much-sought-after Domaine Méo-Camuzet a world-renowned wine producer, which many have no hesitation in placing in Burgundy's top-10.

At first it was Etienne Camuzet, French MP and Mayor of Vosne-Romanée, who founded what we know today as Domaine Méo-Camuzet. Etienne Camuzet laid the foundation for future success with a unique ability to select and build some of the region's absolute finest parcels on some of Burgundy's most legendary vineyards.

Although the domain quickly gained a solid reputation, most of the domain's parcels were leased to other producers, who often continued to sell the wines as unnamed wine to negocians. However, that changed when another great personality, Jean Méo, a distant relative of Etienne Camuzet's descendants, started producing wine under his own name - Méo-Camuzet in 1985.

The agreements with the many tenants of the Méo-Camuzet parcels expired during the 1980s, leading us to a third and decisive personality; namely the legendary regional father, Henri Jayer. For more than 40 years, Henri Jayer took care of some of Méo-Camuzet's parcels, including those on Cros Parantoux and Richebourg - two vineyards among the most prestigious and most recognized in the world.

In the late 1980s, all of Méo-Camuzet's parcels were back in the domain's own custody. However, Henri Jayer remained an essential part of the domain when, for four years, he mentored a fourth personality, the mere 20-year-old Jean-Nicolas Méo, who at this time began to take over the operation of Domaine Méo-Camuzet.

Today Jean-Nicolas Méo, together with Christian Faurois, is in charge of Domaine Méo-Camuzet. Their innovation combined with the iconic Henri Jayer's legacy has secured Domaine Méo-Camuzets a very special status and the top wines are among the most sought-after wines from Burgundy.

2.5 Acres Of Grand Cru And Perhaps The World's Finest Premier Cru

In addition to Méo-Camuzet's close ties to Henri Jayer, the domain is also closely linked to Vosne-Romanées heart. At the time of writing, the domain produces no less than 25 different wines from Village to Grand Cru. The domain's 2.5 ha of Grand Cru vineyards include prominent plots such as Clos de Vougeot, Échezeaux and Richebourg.

With a portfolio of 25 different wines, one could fear that the wide range could harm the diversity and quality of the wines, although this is far from the case. Even the Village wines, in fine vintage, score a solid 89 Parker points, while the top wines in normal vintages are in the mid-90s - quite comparable to other top Burgundy producers and just below the DRC, Leroy and Rousseau when it comes to both price, quality and brand.

The domains absolute flagship wines are undeniable the Grand Cru vineyard Richebourg and Premier Cru vineyard Cros Parantoux. To put things into perspective, Richebourg is shared with prominent producers such as DRC, Domaine Leroy and Domaine Liger-Belair, while Cros Parantoux is exclusively shared with Domaine Emmanuel Rouget. However, in terms of Cros Parantoux, the price of the wines from here reflects more closely the quality and the investment potential than the classification of the field, and is considered by many to be the world's finest Premier Cru.

Henri Jayer's spirit and philosophy lives on in the wines of Méo-Camuzet, but when it comes specifically to the domains wines from Richebourg and Cros Parantoux, the legacy of the legendary winemaker is even more closely linked: Henri Jayer planted these wines in the 1950s and it is still to this day Jayer's old vines supplying grapes to the sought-after wines of Méo-Camuzet.

With a winemaker trained by Henri Jayer and fields cultivated by the legend himself, you cannot come any closer to Henri Jayer's wines - something that the wine lovers and collectors of the world excel at, and something that has made the wines of Méo-Camuzet particularly sought after worldwide.

As You Know Burgundy Best: Created Rare And Difficult To Obtain

Two things can be expected today: the popularity of the largest Burgundy wines and the extremely limited production of the largest Burgundy wines. The same is true of Méo-Camuzet. The wines are widely recognized throughout the world and the production per wine is limited to just 600 bottles a year. A very limited production which, when the wines are released from the domain, makes them relatively rare, and it is not only the house's Grand Cru's that are difficult to raise in investment-suitable quantities.
