Six Rare Opportunities: A Collection Of Great Monuments From The Greatest Categories

A roundup of wines we will never have the chance to acquire in quantity…

Six Monuments, One Rare Opportunity – The Pinnacle from Six Corners of the World

We’ve gathered a selection of wines we will likely never have the chance to acquire in volume or treat with a more focused approach.

But that doesn't change their appeal and investment potential – in fact, quite the opposite. Below, you’ll find six extraordinary wines – what they have in common is that each stands as a monument in its category, making them highly coveted now and, even more so, in the future. As such, only extremely few of each are available.

You’ll find:

  • 1996 Krug Clos du Mesnil (magnum)
  • 2016 Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino Riserva
  • 2015 Mugnier Musigny
  • 1982 La Mission-Haut Brion
  • 2021 Pingus (magnum)
  • 2007 Harlan Estate (magnum)

This is something special. Read on to find out why.

1996 Krug Clos du Mesnil Magnum

One of the world’s greatest Blanc de Blancs and single-vineyard Champagnes, from what is arguably the finest Champagne house in existence, from a monumental vintage – and on top of that, in magnum format. With 100 points from Vinous and 99 points from both Wine Advocate and Richard Juhlin, the 1996 Clos du Mesnil is widely recognized as the greatest Clos du Mesnil ever produced. Vinous didn’t just award it 100 points once – it received a perfect score six times across tastings conducted between 2010 and 2019.

A total production equivalent to just 9,800 standard bottles was released, with magnums being even more limited in supply.

The lowest current listing on wine-searcher.com is €5,333, while the average market price sits at €6,579.

Drinking window: 2011–2036 (regular bottle)

The price has more than doubled over the past 10 years – but in truth, there’s no ceiling to what a masterpiece like this could be worth.

2016 Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

In Champagne, wine lovers look to vintages like 2008, 2002, and 1996. In Brunello di Montalcino, it’s 2016, 2015, and 2010. High scores are nothing new for Poggio di Sotto, but their flagship wine - the Riserva of their Brunello di Montalcino - reached unprecedented heights in the 2016 vintage.

Wine Advocate awarded it a perfect 100 points, while Vinous and James Suckling both rated it 97 points.

But the 2016 Poggio di Sotto wasn’t just extraordinary by the estate’s own standards - it made a mark in the broader Brunello landscape. Wine Advocate has reviewed 206 different Brunello di Montalcino wines. Six received 98 points. One received 99. Three received 100 points. This is one of them - a true icon from one of the greatest Brunello vintages.

Only 8,000 bottles were produced.

The lowest and second-lowest listings on wine-searcher.com are currently €309* and €343*, while the average price sits at €421.

The wine has only been on the market for about three years - and still has a long life ahead.

2015 Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny Grand Cru

One of the most majestic and mythical Grand Cru vineyards. A wine from one of the very finest and most revered producers on the site - and from one of the modern era’s benchmark vintages in Burgundy: 2015.

Mugnier produces only a few thousand bottles of Musigny per vintage - such limited quantity and intense demand means that even top critics don’t always get to taste it. In fact, Burghound, Vinous, and James Suckling haven’t consistently reviewed Mugnier’s Musigny, and Wine Advocate has only published barrel sample notes for recent vintages. One vintage that has received a definitive rating, however, is 2015 - and it landed a magical 100 points from Wine Advocate.

For context: two years ago, the average market price on wine-searcher.com was €4,689. Today, it’s €3,490 (with the lowest-priced single bottle at €2,579). The price has remained stable throughout 2025.

If you’re drawn to Burgundy at the absolute top level, this is a serious candidate for the crown jewel of any wine collection.

1982 La Mission-Haut Brion

One of the most awe-inspiring and impressive offerings we’ve seen in a long time: 12 bottles of 1982 La Mission-Haut Brion, in perfect condition, perfectly preserved in the original wooden case. This is cult Bordeaux at its finest. The 1982 vintage has received 100 points from Wine Advocate four times, most recently in 2022, and La Mission-Haut Brion has been described by the same publication as one of the standout wines of the vintage - a vintage, it should be noted, that produced some of the greatest Bordeaux wines ever made.

Wine Advocate has reviewed 153 Bordeaux wines from 1982. Only six of those still hold a perfect 100-point score. And just one of them is from Pessac-Léognan: this La Mission. For reference, among the five First Growths, only Mouton and Latour also achieved 100 points in 1982.

Though more than 40 years have passed since the harvest, the 1982 may look like an old wine - but it’s now and in the years ahead that a bottle like this truly reveals what Bordeaux is capable of, and why this category continues to dominate the global fine wine market. Wine Advocate suggests a drinking window of 2012–2045, but with ideal cellaring, it could easily live on for decades beyond that.

If you believe in iconic cult wine, this one’s for you - especially in the full 12-bottle case, which remains highly attractive to wine merchants around the world.

The average list price on wine-searcher.com for 1982 La Mission is €1,298, meaning cheaper offers do exist - if you’re willing to handle sourcing and logistics on your own.

Excluding one suspiciously cheap lot, the lowest price for any of the five currently listed 12-bottle cases is €1,290 per bottle.

2021 Dominio de Pingus Pingus Magnum

When speaking of Spain’s greatest, most exclusive, and most iconic wines, Vega Sicilia’s Único is impossible to ignore - but a very close contender is undoubtedly Pingus from Dominio de Pingus, crafted by Danish winemaking wizard Peter Sisseck.

The flagship wine Pingus is known for its consistently high quality and extremely low yields. Since the turn of the millennium, Wine Advocate has awarded Pingus a perfect 100 points five times. Meanwhile, yields have increased from just 12 hl/ha to 20 hl/ha, meaning that in the 2021 vintage, production amounted to the equivalent of just 8,200 standard bottles - this offering is a magnum. For comparison, the permitted yield for many red Grand Crus in Burgundy is 35 hl/ha.

At present, there are 23 listings for a 2021 Pingus magnum on wine-searcher.com. The lowest price is €1,706, and the average sits at €2,046.

From Spain, this is among the greatest you can get.

2007 Harlan Estate Magnum

Harlan Estate is a cult, Bordeaux-inspired producer with an extreme focus on terroir and longevity. Alongside Screaming Eagle and Opus One, Harlan defines the pinnacle of American winemaking. Each of the three stands out in its own way - Screaming Eagle for its rarity (and price), Opus One for its larger production volume, and Harlan for delivering consistently sublime quality.

That quality is affirmed by Wine Advocate, which has awarded seven vintages of Harlan a perfect 100 points since the turn of the millennium - including the 2007 vintage. In addition, the 2007 also received 98 points from Vinous and 97 from James Suckling.

The 2007 is in its drinking window but still has a long life ahead - especially in magnum, which is what’s offered here. Once you’ve tasted great, mature American wine, it tends to stay with you - and wine lovers around the world know this well. In that regard, Harlan Estate is a truly exceptional choice.

There are currently just 10 listings of 2007 Harlan Estate in magnum format on wine-searcher.com, mostly located in the U.S. and Asia. The lowest price is €2,502, while the average is €3,355.

This is already a prized wine treasure - but it will only grow more valuable with time. What’s more, this offer is for a full case of three magnums, in flawless condition. Very few of these can still exist today (the bottles listed on wine-searcher.com are all single bottles).
