A Monk Ahead Of His Time Discovered Wine With Bubbles

In 1670, when the Benedictine monk Dom Thierry Ruinart was 23 years old, he left his home in Champagne to study at the convent of Saint-Germain-des-Prés in Paris. Ruinart was an excellent theologian and historian, and he was humble, visionary and hardworking. 

During his time in Paris, he gained insight into the world outside the church, and especially "wine with bubbles" was extremely popular among the young aristocrats in Paris. 

The monk's contemporary and well-developed business sense as well as the encounter with the magic bubbles led in 1729 to the founding of Maison Ruinart - the world's very first Champagne-producing company. It was Ruinart's nephew, Nicolas Ruinart, who adopted the vision and founded the Champagne house. 

A Draper Became Champagne Master

Nicolas Ruinart was actually a draper, but six years into the Champagne adventure, he gave up his work with textiles to concentrate fully on his Champagne business. This should prove to be a good priority, because growth quickly became a fact. 170 bottles sold in 1730, 3,000 bottles in 1731 and 36,000 bottles in 1761 - something that the sales and marketing channels of the time considered was an extreme growth.  

The success was evident, and in 1768 Ruinart acquired the former Gallo-Roman chalk quarries under the town of Reims. The chalk quarry was hollowed out to a depth of 38 meters and therefore perfect for storing Ruinart's many bottles. Here a stable temperature, perfect humidity and absolute absence of vibrations prevail. 

The Soul Of Ruinart Consists Of Chardonnay

Grapes mainly harvested from the Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims are the hearts of the cuvées that come from the Ruinarts. The Dom Ruinart NV Blanc de Blancs consists of 100% chardonnay from different vintages, and 20-25% of these are reserve wines from the two previous vintages.

Ruinarts 1.7 million bottles also cover all non-vintage Champagnes, Blanc de Blanc vintage Champagnes, rosé vintages, rosé non-vintages and various kinds of Vinothéque. That leaves the Millésime Blanc de Blancs with only a fragment of the 1.7 million bottles - and this on average only in every two years. 

Add to that the 2009 Dom Pérignon got a score across the critics of 94.3 and the 2009 Cristal a score of 96.3. With Dom Ruinart the investor get a slightly cheaper Champagne produced in smaller quantities.
